Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are currently sitting at 34 wins, 23 losses, and 12 tie games on the season.  Overall, they have 80 points, positioning them in the eighth spot in the NHL Western Conference and third place in their division. The Red Wings are on a three game winning streak, and are making an end-of the season surge to secure a spot in the upcoming playoffs.

Detroit had been without player Johan Franzen until February 9th, when he returned from a knee injury.  Since Franzen’s return, the Red Wings have scored 12 power-play goals, and have scored at least one power play goal in ten consecutive games.

This recent success is certainly due to Franzen’s cohesiveness with teammate Pavel Datsyuk.   They really complement each other well, and their success has translated into a late-season rally for the Red Wings.

Due to the high level of success seen in Detroit over the team’s storied history, expectations for the team have been high from the beginning of the season.  Anything less than a Stanley Cup victory for the Red Wings will be seen as a disappointment for fans.  With the team sitting at the 8th seed in the playoff hunt, players and fans alike are hoping to continue this late-season success to improve their playoff position.

Even if the Red Wings end up as the eight seed, don’t count them out yet.  If the playoffs were to start today, they would be paired up with the San Jose Sharks, a team that they have beaten three out of four times this year.
