NHL Preview: Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are gearing up for a new season after falling short of winning it all in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Red Wings enjoyed a solid season in the regular season, but they were unable to put up much of a fight against the San Jose Sharks. NHL lines expect better performance in the new season.
The Sharks really had control of the series, showing that they had what it would take to win the close games that took place. The Red Wings lost 4 games that series by one goal. This will be a concern for the Red Wings in the upcoming season.
They need to prove to themselves that they are able to play in these sorts of close games with confidence. If they can find a way to win close games like these against the top teams in the league, they will be a scary team in the upcoming season.
The Red Wings are known for their stellar defensive play. They were 7th in the NHL in goals allowed last season, allowing just 2.5 goals per game. The biggest problem is that they were not able to score much more than this. They only managed to score 2.7 goals per game during the season. This was only the 14th best total in the NHL. You expect an elite team to do better than this offensively.
The Red Wings will be led by Pavel Datsyuk, their leader in points last season. He scored 27 goals while dishing out 43 assists on the season. He will be key in getting the offense going this season.
