NHL: NHLPA Files Objection to Kovalchuck’s Disputed Contract
On July 26, 2010 the NHL Players Association filed an objection to Ilya Kovalchuck’s disputed contract. The players association claims that Kovalchuck’s contract does not violate any of the laws stated in the collective bargaining agreement.
The one of a kind 17 year contract for $102 Million was rejected last week by the National Hockey League. The NHL stated the 17 year contract violated the salary cap and was unacceptable. The contract would Kovalchuck reaches the age of 44 in 2016.
Most of the speculation about the contract is the Ilya Kovalchuck would earn the bulk of this money early on. Kovalchuck would be earning only $3.5 million total in the last 6 years of his contract. Some are saying that the purpose of the small pay check the last few years of his career were created to avoid the cap.
All of the teams have their own needs. That is why some find it ridiculous that the chairman of the NHL, Gary Bettman, wants to put a cap on salaries for NHL players across the board. All of the teams have their own needs.
It’s starting to come down to the wire, but at this point it is wait and see for Kovalchuck. It’s hard to say what will come of the objection by the NHLPA.
