The Ottawa Senators @ Toronto Maple Leafs 06/02/2010

The Ottawa Senators visit the Toronto Maple Leafs in a battle of fierce Northeast division rivals on Saturday.

The Senators are currently riding a 10-game win streak sitting at second place in the division, and are in the middle of the playoff hunt, sitting at the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference. If they can continue to play at a high level they have a legitimate shot at the division title.

Conversely the Toronto Maple Leafs are sitting next to last in conference, and dead last in division.

The rivalry between these two squads is intriguing to say the least. For years the teams were both blanketed with horrendous nick names. The Nadir being that the Sens could at least say they weren’t the Maple Leafs. However, the Sens regular season prowess would more often then not fail to the Leafs’ Postseason play.

If current streaks are a barometer then the Leafs 3-5-2 record in the last ten fails completely against the Sens 10-0-0 mark. The Senators boast a trio of scorers with 39 or more points, led by Daniel Alfredsson at 44, Mike Fisher at 42, and Alexei Kovalev at 39. They also have solid if unspectacular goalie play.

The Maple Leafs top trio is close but not quite on par. Tomas Kaberle has 43, Alexei Ponikarovsky has 40, and Phil Kessel sits at 34. Sadly the Leafs goalie play is also lacking against the Senators.

We’ll find out soon enough if the underdog Leafs can provide a check to the Senators or if the numbers truly tell the story.
